Breathe deep … Then hold …Now immerse …
We are living in the middle of the largest technological revolution since we mechanised farming. We gradually came in from the fields to the cities, developed a five day working week and changed the shape of our society forever. With new technologies emerging at a every increasing rate, we ask what will the next 20 years bring? Here at The Old Market, we launched #TOMtech to assist artists to explore this brave new world.
As a regular here you will see #TOMtech bringing innovative shows to the stage, new VR shows that enable you to visit immersive new realities as well as finding out about the latest tech trends and discoveries.
For artists, we run Labs to introduce these new technologies and allow space for creatives to see what is possible when they can master these tools. This year, we are running a workshop on the basics of VR / AR coding and offering two theatre companies a funded week exploring how we can use real-time motion capture, live on stage.
As the season approaches, we will post more on this blog – with thoughts from the technologists and artists we work with, content from behind the scenes and more. We invite you to join in the debate at one of our talks, our STORYHACK conference and online. Follow us at @TOMtech_ or explore what others are saying via #TOMtech
As the programme goes live, we will talk you through whats on offer. First up – some ground-breaking, Immersive Tech:
In 2016, #TOMtech began to explore how VR can be used to reinvent the live, shared experience. 2017 sees the UKs first full VR ‘theatre’ productions, FROGMAN and WHIST, come to Brighton. Both have limited capacity, so book quick. For a completely immersive experience, join us for HABITATS, a special coming together of installations that explore the natural world by super cool design studio, Marshmallow Laser Feast. Returning after 2016’s sell out run, vrLAB opens the doors to VR/AR makers to showcase their games, adventures, experiences and stories.
HABITATS | Marshmallow Laser Feast | 28 Aug – 10 Sep, various sessions | from £10
For two special weeks our venue will be turned into a breathtaking digital forest, where nature and technology dramatically collide.
Cutting edge London creative studio Marshmallow Laser Feast return following their sell-out run of In The Eyes of the Animal as part of vrLAB here at TOM last year, filling our space with large-scale installations and unforgettable VR experiences. Book now, as we expect this to sell out.
This large, interactive, musical laser installation, which will take up most of the main space, is composed of musical ‘trees’ made of steel rods and lasers which you can physically tap, shake, and pluck.
Tribeca Film Festival – Winner Storyscapes Award
Through a huge replica model of a giant sequoia tree and a Vive VR headset, Treehugger lets the viewer experience the scale and wonder of one of the largest living individual organisms on earth.
In The Eyes of the Animal
The hit VR experience returns for a second year running. Go on a fascinating journey that allows you to fly through the forest and embody various animals as they traverse the Grizedale Forest landscape.
Beyond the main exhibition, we have curated other habitats around the building – dive with a blue whale, mount the peak of Everest, explore the outer edges of our solar system and get hands on with the Sussex Wildlife Trustto find out more about our local habitats and how we can all help to protect them.
FROGMAN | curious directive | Tue 05 Sep – Sat 10 Sep | 6pm & 8.30pm | £12.50 / £10
A coming of age, supernatural thriller, told through VR and binaural sound.
Queensland, Australia, 1995. Meera is eleven. It’s her first sleepover. Strawberry dunkaroos, SEGA Megadrive, and band practice descends into stories by torchlight, swapping coral fragments and theorising about the universe. Lights off. In the corner, the aquarium is beginning to glow. Outside in the coral reef, the Frogman dives by moonlight looking for traces of a missing child as blue police lights reflect across the water. With the annual coral bloom due, time is running out.
These performances at TOM are the first English dates after its premiere at the Traverse, Edinburgh (for the Edinburgh Festival). Commissioned by TOM, this impressive VR show from double Fringe First-winners curious directive takes you inside the rainforests of the sea.
** LIMITED CAPACITY – EARLY BOOKING ADVISED **
